July 1st – 22nd, 2017

Reception: July 22nd, 6:00 – 9:00 PM

Recognizing the gender discrepancy of vulnerability, Taylor Yocom sheds light on how the materials we surround ourselves with speak to power dynamics. Though portraits of female-identified people on college campuses and community centers around the country holding what they use to protect themselves from sexual assault, Guarded offers a glimpse onto this reality.

From devices obviously marketed as self-defense tools to mundane everyday objects, these tools show that we are “on guard” in so many aspects of our lives with this ritualized response. We were gifted pepper spray from our fathers and taught how to hold keys between our fingers by our mothers. We pretended we were talking on the phone or had an umbrella or flashlight handy in case of an attacker. Guarded is a statement on strength and vulnerability, giving a face to the articles and statistics.
